We traveled to a couple bigger cities and made a deal with the Azuviir family to protect the artifact. We were told about a big trade event happening that might be a good way to pass around the word of Lord Soth being a badass. I may have found someone to fully resurrect my father.
We traveled to where we thought the old dwarven city/outpost is to find the pestel.
After some searching we found the entrance and it was guarded by some rather tough gnolls. They had well hidden arrow slits on the approach and the main room has a trap door that leads to other lower areas. While fighting ensued below in the trap floor room another "trap" was set off that created some kind of sand golem creature that we defeated as well.
We then encountered a hill giant with the head of a beholder and a bunch more gnolls. After an extended battle with many charm monster spells directed against our own friends we destroyed the hill beholder giant.
